Our Commitment to Care

Cedar Lodge is more than just a care home; it’s a community dedicated to enhancing quality of life.
We provide comprehensive support and holistic care tailored to individual needs.
Our compassionate staff are committed to making a difference to the lives of those who live here.

Meeting peoples needs...

The objective at Cedar lodge is to meet the needs of people within the home. Primarily the people here are elderly (i.e. over the age of 65) however, as the home specialises with supporting people with Dementia then the age group is not specific and some people may well be younger than 65 years, in these instances age is therefore flexible and may incorporate any of the following conditions: -

  • People with Dementia
  • Mental Health needs including people detained under the mental health act
  • People with an eating disorder
  • Learning difficulties and/or Autistic spectrum disorder (ASD)
  • Sensory impairment
  • Physical disability

Prior to admission, there are stringent assessment processes in place to identify needs and to ensure that Cedar Lodge is able to meet these needs to the benefit of the individual.

We recognise that some people may live with difficulties which include a number of the above categories.

Cedar Lodge will not undertake any support which does not fall within its registration with CQC.

Choice of Home...

We recognise that every prospective person should have the opportunity to choose a home which suits their needs and abilities.

To facilitate choice and to ensure that our residents know precisely what we offer we do the following:

  • Provide a statement of purpose and have a resident’s guide on site
  • Develop a contract for everyone specifying the details of their occupancy
  • Prospective people’s needs are assessed before a decision on admission is taken unless an emergency or crisis necessitates immediate action.  In these instances, rapid assessment will then occur
  • Demonstrate and or explain to potential residents that we can meet their assessed needs and how this will be achieved
  • Offer introductory visits to prospective residents and a 3-month monitored preliminary period to establish whether Cedar Lodge has been the appropriate choice of residence

We wish to provide the highest quality care, and to do this priority is given to a number of areas relating to the operation of the home and the services on offer.

Personal & Health Care...

We draw on professional guidance for the services the home provides. In pursuit of the best possible care we will do the following:

  • Produce with each person and their families, regularly update and implement an individual plan of care, based on initial and continuing assessment
  • Establish and maintain careful procedures for the administration of medicines
  • Take steps to safeguard privacy and dignity in all aspects of the delivery of health and personal care
  • Sensitively support people and their families when Palliative care needs arise

Care is delivered by qualified care staff and managers and is regulated by the Care Quality Commission (CQC). Care is based on a person centred individually produced care plan.

There are occasions when other healthcare professionals are required, and this is facilitated either from within the home or externally at appropriate premises; these may include but are not restricted to GP, CPN, DN, Chiropodist, Optician, Dentist, Speech and Language therapists and Dietician.

Medical care is provided by the GP of the residents’ choice as far as is reasonably possible and both management and staff maintain good rapport with local health services.

Privacy, Dignity, Diversity, Independence, Choice, Fulfilment & Security

Privacy

We recognise that life in a communal setting and the need to accept help with personal tasks are inherently invasive of a persons right to enjoy the pleasure of being alone and undisturbed. We therefore strive to retain as much privacy as possible for our residents in the following ways:

  • Giving help in intimate situations as discreetly as possible
  • Assisting people to furnish and equip their rooms in their own style and use them as much as they wish for leisure, meals and entertaining
  • Offering a range of locations around the home for residents to be alone or with people they choose to socialise with
  • Providing locks to bedrooms and other rooms in which people need at times to be uninterrupted
  • Guaranteeing privacy when people are using the telephone, opening and reading post and communicating with friends, relatives and advisors’
  • Ensuring the confidentiality of information the home holds concerning residents.  For instance, medical notes, care files etc.

Dignity

Disabilities may undermine dignity, so we try to preserve respect for peoples’ intrinsic value in the following ways:

  • Treating each person as a special and valued individual
  • Helping residents to present themselves to others as they would wish with their own personal choice of clothing, personal appearance and supporting behaviour in public when necessary
  • Offering a range of activities which enables each person to express themselves as a unique individual
  • Preventing any stigma from which an individual may suffer through age, disability or status
  • Compensating for the effects of disabilities which residents may experience due to issues with regard to communication, physical, mobility or appearance

Diversity

We aim to demonstrate that we welcome and celebrate diversity of people in our community and in the home;

This is done with: -

  • Positive communication regardless of diverse backgrounds
  • Respecting and providing for any ethnic, cultural and religious practices
  • Zero tolerance of negative discriminatory behaviour by staff and others
  • Accommodate individual preferences without censure
  • Support people to celebrate events, anniversaries and festivals which are important to them

Independence

We are aware that our residents have given up some of their independence due to entering a group living situation; Therefore, we regard it as all the more important to foster peoples remaining opportunities to think and act without relying upon other people, in the following ways:

  • Providing as tactfully as possible human or technical assistance when it is needed
  • Maximising the abilities our residents to retain their abilities with self-care, independent interaction with others, and carrying out the tasks of daily living unaided
  • Helping residents take reasonable and fully thought out risks incorporating risk assessments when needed
  • Prompting possibilities for residents to establish and maintain contacts beyond the home
  • Refraining from using any form of restraint of residents unless there is a situation of urgency, when it is essential for their own safety or safety of others
  • Encouraging people to access and contribute to the planning and recording of their own care

Choice

We aim to help people exercise the opportunity to select from a range of options in all aspects of their lives in the following ways:

  • Providing choices of meals and enabling people as far as possible to decide for themselves where, when and with whom they have their meals
  • Offering a range of activities which are person centred either in groups or individually
  • Enabling people to manage their own time and not to be dictated to by set communal timetables. For instance, bed times, meals times and times for personal care
  • Avoiding treating people as a homogeneous group
  • Respecting and assisting people to manager their individual behaviour
  • Ensuring maximum flexibility in the routines of the daily life of the home

Fulfilment

We wish to enable people to realise their personal aspirations and abilities in all aspects of their lives and seek to support them in the following ways:

  • Informing ourselves as fully as possible as to each persons’ wishes concerning their life histories and characteristics
  • Provide a range of activities that are person centred and stimulate participation
  • Respond appropriately to personal, intellectual, artistic and spiritual values
  • Respect religious, ethnic and cultural diversity
  • Help maintain existing contacts such as family and friends and make new associations where wished for
  • Attend promptly to communications on part of the person, at whatever level. This may be verbal, nonverbal or behavioural types of communication

Security

We aim to provide an environment and structure of support which responds to the need for security in the following ways:

  • Offering assistance with tasks and in situations that would otherwise be prohibitive for residents to manage themselves
  • Protecting people from all forms of abuse
  • Providing readily accessible channels for dealing with complaints in a format appropriate to the individual
  • Creating an atmosphere in the home which is experienced as open, positive and inclusive
  • There is a call bell system in every room and help is available when required any time day or night; In addition, every person has their own pendent alarm
  • The home is accessed by a secure keypad system which is serviced and checked on a regular basis

We place the rights of the people at the forefront of our philosophy of care.  We seek to advance these rights in all aspects of the environment and the services we provide and to encourage our residents to exercise their rights to the full.
